The next Board of Directors term will begin in June 2020. New members will join us as we continue to implement our strategic plan and continue to find new and innovative ways to serve our community.
The Nominating Committee is seeking new Board members with competencies in one or more of the following areas:
- Government relations
- Finance and/or Accounting
- Community engagement
- Health, social or community services sector
Prior experience in the following areas would be an asset:
- Serving on a non-profit or for-profit governance board
- Developing social enterprises
- Connection to or within the DHA community
In addition to the above competencies, province-wide representation on the board is important. Through technology, online attendance at board meetings is a possibility, and we encourage applicants throughout the province to apply.
Each Board member commits to a minimum 2 year term. Meetings occur monthly, approximately 10 times per year, in the evenings. Depending on interest, Board Directors may participate on Board Committees and are actively encouraged to participate in events and activities to support Deaf & Hear Alberta.

Would you like to make a difference in a senior’s life? We are currently seeking volunteers who would be willing to be a companion to a Deaf senior. Depending on the individual, this could involve a variety of things- visiting them in their home, going shopping together, or even just going for a walk. This is a wonderful opportunity to provide friendship and companionship to a senior who may not be able to participate in the same activities that they used to.
Please note: Due to the nature of this position, volunteers must be fluent in ASL.

Hearing loss can be devastating but with perseverance, positivity and the support of friends, family and community, it can be successfully navigated. Our Peer-to-Hear Mentoring program is supported and funded by FCSS (Family and Community Support Services), which allows us to offer support and assistance to adults at risk of isolation due to hearing loss. As the volunteer mentor, you will act as a support person and be willing to draw on your own experience to provide support. Mentors will attend a training session at Deaf & Hear Alberta.
In our individual mentoring program, the Mentor is expected to:
- Attend Mentor/Mentee Group Meet & Greet (1-2 hours) to:
- review the commitment, expectations, policies & procedures of mentoring program
- determine mentee’s goal for the length of the program
- Meet with their Mentees weekly for approximately one hour in a public space
- Complete program evaluations
In our group mentoring program, the Mentor is expected to:
- With the coordinator, meet with a group of between 3 – 6 adults on-site (within Calgary city limits)
- Attend one-hour bi-weekly meetings to assist in setting goals, and supporting issues of the group mentees
- Complete program evaluations
